Explanation of terms

EPLF – European Producers of Laminate Flooring – have stringent tests for laminates which are then graded AC1 to AC5 – AC stands for Abrasion Class which represents the wear characteristics of the laminate. For more details on how the grading process works look at our understanding flooring document.

Accreditation is a practical exam for installer team members which all installer members must attend and pass before they are listed on our web site. They must follow correct installation procedures. If at any time they have floor failure due to incorrect fitting or incorrect materials they fail and will need to re-do the exam until such time as they follow correct installation methods.

Advanced Accreditation is a practical exam which only accredited members can take. This tests for capability in all the finer finishes of a laminate floor, for example, stairs, basins, toilets, door frames, and curved walls. Each team member is tested individually.

Importers – What SAWLFA is accomplishing is to list only products that conform to European Standards. We only list importer members with the test reports/certificates to prove they are in compliance. Products listed go through strict testing and are graded. We can safely state that the products are then guaranteed and can be used for what they are advertised for.

By using our importers products retailers can have peace of mind that they are selling a quality product backed by the importer and so they can safely hand out guarantees.

Laminate Flooring – Frequently Asked Questions

Due to our own extensive experience in supplying and installing laminate flooring, and the tremendous amount of testing that goes into this new revolutionary system, the products Flooring Boyz supply is backed by between 10 – 50 years against wear, stains and fading. These floors can easily withstand just about any of the normal flooring situations experienced in the home.

How do you identify a quality laminate floor?

A truly high quality floor will have a minimum of 4 layers. The top layer (1) would consist of a transparent scratch and stain resistant wear layer, having a higher taber (wear resistance) value. Next would be the design layer (2), a melamine resin impregnated paper, having various patterns and designs ranging from wood grains to stone, to many more imaginative and decorative type designs. Then would come the core (3), which would be constructed of a high quality, high density fiberboard, manufactured with a water resistant glue. Then the stabilizing layer or balancing layer (4). This layer is also impregnated with melamine resin and is of a thickness to balance the product, thus eliminating “cupping” and “warping”.

What about Scratches?

Flooring Boyz products are particularly resistant to impact and scratches. Shoes and heels are not a problem. Scuff marks are easily cleaned using a damp cloth with windowlene or assetone. To keep your laminate floor looking new for years to come, certain precautions should be taken (just the same as you would with any good wood floor). Felt pads should be used under furniture legs and special hard floor castors should be fitted to wheeled chairs. Use a plastic floor mat or other similar protective material on the floor under desk seating areas.

Is Flooring Boyz laminate floors easy to maintain?

Flooring Boyz supplies only top quality Laminate Flooring, and is very easy to maintain, is resistant to household chemicals, impacts, wear, scratches and cigarette burns.

Spills such as sauces, jam, drinks and food can be wiped away using a clean dry cloth and normal windowlene. A burning cigarette falling on the floor will not leave a mark. Stubborn stains are easily removed with a little acetone. Everything else – just dust mop or vacuum. Cleaning is that easy!

Does Flooring Boyz Products warp?

Warping or the “banana” effect is a common occurrence with many laminate flooring products available on the market today. Warping prevents the installer from achieving tight joints between panels during installation. the modern Laminate Flooring we supply has eliminated this problem once and for all through its unique conditioning process during manufacturing.

How is the flooring shipped?

Special packaging ensures that the flooring panels are fully protected during shipping. The floor is part of a total concept, which includes under flooring, matching molding, installation kits, cleaning and maintenance product. In other words – a complete package! The tongue and groove are designed to enable the panels to “click” together seamlessly and effortlessly. The surface edges of the panels have been specially treated to increase the moisture resistance of the floor.

What tests are the Laminate Flooring subjected to?

Moisture Testing
The Laminate Flooring products are continuously tested. Our manufacturers utilizes the highest quality materials in their manufacturing process. The HDF (high density fiberboard) core material is manufactured with a waterproof glue. This does not make the product water proof but does make it less susceptible to swelling. The testing process involves submersing the flooring in water for a period of time and then measuring the product to insure that swelling is at a minimum.

Laminate Flooring Joint Pull Test
Connected panels are mechanically pulled at a tension of approximately 450 kg per meter or approximately the pulling tension of six grown men pulling boards apart. Panels are then dismantled to insure that the joint holds but can be taken apart with little or no force.

Dimensional Stability
Precision measuring equipment is used to constantly check on the dimensions and shape of the tongue and groove so that a perfect, tight and seemingly seamless joint is assured.

Can you recycle Laminate Flooring?

The panels are entirely recyclable. As in any other conventional laminate flooring, the tongue and groove of our product range are an integral part of the HDF base layer.

How long before you can walk on the new floor?

Immediately! There is no need to wait for hours while glue dries. You can walk on your floor and put your furniture back in place as soon as your floor is installed.

Does the manufacturing of Laminate Flooring affect the environment?

In the production of Laminate Flooring, a great deal of attention is paid to the environment.

It became apparent to us over the years that, all too often, clients are not sufficiently informed as to what to expect from their flooring and how to maintain it. For this reason Flooring Boyz is committed to sharing our advice and trade secrets with you as the customer.

Now you may be asking why would we do that? Why will a company share it’s trade secrets and advice with the general public, even before the company itself has been chosen to do the work? Well, for us it is quite simple. Flooring Boyz takes pride in our work and we also take pride in our honesty. It is important for us that our customers are well informed and educated in making the right choices for their flooring needs. Making a quick buck has never been important to us, however, credibility and our good name is all we have. Even if you choose not to use Flooring Boyz, that’s a pity but no problem – we still believe that the information we will share with you, will save you time, money and a lot of headaches.

Flooring Boyz endeavours to raise the level of our customer satisfaction as we consider that this subject is very important. It is important for our potential customers to understand what they are getting from us, or should be getting from there contractor of choice.

WORTHWILE INFORMATION YOU SHOULD KNOW:

The necessity of refusing to lay a floor if the moisture levels in the substrate were too high:
This is another very important component of a successful installation. Please ensure that the floor area or substrate the installation will be done on is 100% dry. Any excessive moisture will cause problems with your floor. Perhaps not immediately but it will nevertheless. Always ensure that this checked prior to the installation. Builders are often in a rush to meet deadlines and can take an unnecessary risk in the process. So stay safe and make sure the floor area is dry before any work is done.
Refusing to lay the product if there has been insufficient acclimatisation period for the material:
This is something even professional contractors over look. Material such as wooden products (including laminates) need to acclimatize. For example: You may live in a different area (coast, lowveld etc) than the origin of your floors or your contractor. Should the material not come from the exact same area as you live in, and it has not been given the appropriate time acclimatize, things can and will often go wrong.
Informing the client about expansion joints around door frames:
Another simple yet important word of advice. Makes sure that your contract knows what this means and how to use expansion joints effectively. If sufficient joints are not provided or installed, your floor will end up giving you problems in the future.
Maximum lengths of flooring before expansion joints have to be included:
It should be common sense, yet is still ignored too often. Making sure that extra expansion joints are installed is crucial when doing a large floor area. Wood and laminates alike, breath, expand and contract, according to climatic and heat changes. If insufficient expansion joints are not provided your floor will cause problems for you.
The fact that wood and laminate floors do expand and contract and the extreme importance of having a level surface without bumps and undulations on which to lay the floor:
As we just mentioned above, wooden and laminate floors do expand and contract, so it is important that the contractor you choose make sure that they leave sufficient room for this during the installation. Preparing the floor before installation is critical and you need to ensure that the floor is 100% clear of any bumps or undulations, or it will cause you problems. Be especially careful that your contractor knows what they are doing when it comes to old parquet floors and slate floors.

All of these things are of utmost importance in order to avoid your unhappiness and also should be important from your contractor’s point of view, avoiding any unnecessary expense in trying to make good from the there side later on:

The subject of underfloor heating also comes under discussion often. A representative of a SAWLFA affiliate member who supplies underfloor heating, explained that potential clients had to be informed that:

Heating to wood and laminate flooring could never be as effective as that to carpets or tiles because the sensation when walking on these surfaces were different:
A wood or laminate floor should never be laid on an existing underfloor heating installation for carpet or tile as this would damage the floor due to excessive heat:
Extreme care has to be taken in laying rugs on top of a heated floor as the heat build-up under the rug would be excessive:

Incorrect maintenance is also often the cause of failure of the floor to comply with acceptable tolerances. Water has to be avoided at all costs. The best advice is that the cleaning material be purchased from the supplier of the floor. Common household cleaners such as Jik, dish washing liquid, etc. should be discouraged as they will either damage or leave a residue.

For this reason we always give our customer instructions on how to clean the floor.
